You decided to change. You meant it. For a while, something shifted. Then, somewhere between the decision and the destination, the momentum quietly ran out.
Read more of Johanna's thoughts about stress, resilience, personal development and the stuff that doesn't get said nearly enough.
I want you to try something.
Imagine you have a crystal ball. Not a mystical, fortune-telling one, just a clear view of yourself twelve months from now. The person you'll be on this day next year, if you keep going in the direction you're heading.
Really look. What do you see?
For some people, that image is exciting. For others, it's uncomfortable. For some, if they're honest, it's a version of themselves they don't particularly want to become. They’re tired, stuck, still carrying the same things and still waiting for the right moment to do the thing they keep putting off.
Which version is yours showing you?
Whether you're intentional about it or not, you're changing. Every day. Every choice. Every thing you do and every thing you avoid. All of it is shaping the person you're becoming.
Most people only think about this in hindsight. They look back and notice the drift. They can see exactly when they stopped pushing, stopped growing, started coasting. They wonder how they got quite so far from where they meant to be.
This crystal ball isn't about prediction. It's about intention. It's about asking yourself, right now, while you still have the chance to course correct, is this where I'm actually trying to go?
There's a gap for most of us. Between who we are now and who we want to become. Between the life we're living and the life we'd choose if we were being completely honest.
That gap isn't a problem. That gap is just the work that needs to happen.
The people who close it didn’t have it easy, they weren’t naturally confident, and they didn’t somehow know what they were doing from the start. They're the ones who looked at their crystal ball, didn't love what they saw, and decided to do something about it. They had a clear vision of what *should* be in the crystal ball.
They invested in themselves. They got uncomfortable. They kept going through the messy middle, which, as I wrote last month, is where most people stop.
Gradually, the gap closed. Not all at once. Not without setbacks. But it closed.
This is worth thinking about. The version of you that you want to become, the one in the crystal ball that you want to see, what do they know that you don't yet?
What have they figured out? What have they let go of? What did they have to unlearn to get there?
The gap between here and there isn't just about effort. It's about the beliefs, the patterns, and the stories that will either carry you forward or keep you anchored to where you are now.
The good news is that those things are workable. They're not fixed. They're not permanent. They can be examined, challenged, and changed, if you're willing to do that work.
I say this not to panic you, but to make it real.
Six months ago, you might have set intentions for this year. Maybe you called them resolutions. Maybe you just had a quiet sense of what you wanted things to look like.
How's it going? Not on paper. Really.
If the honest answer is "not quite how I hoped", that's fine. That's useful information. There's still half a year left. That's not nothing. That's plenty of time to make a real difference to what your crystal ball shows you in December.
But only if you start now. Not next month. Now.
So I'll ask again. If you could see your future self clearly, not the polished, Instagram version, but the real one, would you recognise them? Would you be proud of what they’ve built?
Or would you see someone who's been busy, but not building? Moving, but not forward?
The crystal ball doesn't decide. You do.
The person you're becoming is being shaped right now, in the choices you make this week, this month, this half of the year.
Make them count.
